Infectious Diseases Institute

A Model to be Replicated throughout Africa

Accordia Global Health Foundation, in partnership with Pfizer Inc, the Academic Alliance, and Makerere University, established the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) as a preeminent center in sub-Saharan Africa for infectious disease training, treatment, and research within Uganda's Makerere University.

IDI is an independent teaching, research, and clinical organization that was created through a major public-private partnership in 2004 and has now become an academic institute within the Makerere University College of Health Sciences.

By enhancing the stature and recognition of the Faculty of Medicine at Makerere University, Accordia is helping to reverse the trend of African healthcare professionals pursuing career opportunities abroad. African doctors and medical scientists can now pursue their clinical interests in a world-class academic medical setting and serve those in their homeland. Above all, Accordia’s IDI model – combining training, clinical care and prevention, and research in an African-based, academic medical institution – has proven extraordinarily productive, with far-reaching applications for similar disease-fighting efforts elsewhere in Africa.
