SAN FRANCISCO, CA - December 8, 2014 - New York Times highlights the story of another American doctor who was diagnosed with the Ebola virus in early September but now has made a full recovery. The Doctor, Ian Crozier, had been in Sierra Leone responding to the outbreak as a volunteer with the World Health Organization.

Dr. Ian Crozier has partnered with Accordia Global Health Foundation since 2008 - as an infectious disease clinician, medical education specialist, and operational research lead – in support of the organization’s efforts to permanently improve healthcare systems in Africa.

WASHINGTON, DC, August 28, 2014 - Accordia Global Health Foundation congratulates the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) and CIDRZ CEO, Dr. Charles Holmes, Deputy CEO, Dr. Izukanji Sikazwe, and Dr Elvin Geng of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) on the receipt of a $4.76 million award from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support the Better Information for Health in Zambia study.

The purpose of the Better Information for Health in Zambia study is to more accurately measure loss to follow-up, and to determine the factors that lead to as many as 40% of HIV-infected patients to fall out of enrolled antiretroviral (ART) treatment programs in Zambia. More accurate estimates of the outcomes of HIV patients enrolled in care will assist the Zambian government to make informed decisions about HIV care service provision so that health programs and facilities better meet the needs of their HIV-infected patients, keeping them in care and returning them to health.

The ‘Better Info’ study is collaboration between CIDRZ, UCSF, and includes multiple Zambian and other co-Investigators from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Learn More About the Study

WASHINGTON DC, August 19, 2014 - In a new paper, published today, Professor Marcia Weaver and colleagues report an overview of the findings from the Integrated Infectious Disease Capacity-Building Evaluation (IDCAP).

Accordia Global Health Foundation, with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, launched IDCAP to better equip mid-level practitioners to manage infectious diseases and to advance the global health community’s understanding of the cost-effectiveness of innovative training approaches. IDCAP created a state-of-the-art package of training interventions that incorporated three key elements: 1) a focus on mid-level practitioners, 2) integration across infectious diseases, and 3) on-site support.

The impact of training was tested on three levels: individual clinician capacity and practice, facility performance, and patient health outcomes. Professor Weaver's article, entitled Improving Facility Performance in Infectious Disease Care in Uganda: a Mixed Design Study with Pre/Post and Cluster Randomized Trial Components , describes the impact of the IDCAP interventions on 23 facility performance indicators.

IDCAP improved the quality of care in several areas with a combination of infectious disease training, on-site team training and mentoring, and quality improvement interventions. The IDCAP interventions resulted in statistically significant improvements in six facility performance indicators related to emergency triage, assessment and treatment (ETAT), malaria diagnosis and treatment, pneumonia assessment, and enrollment in HIV care. However, the on-site support intervention alone, significantly improved performance in only one of the 23 facility indicators.

Kelly Willis, Accordia’s Executive Director and a co-author, explained, “The majority of research in medicine and public health focuses on a single disease and a single outcome, which is often appropriate.  This vertical focus however, may sometimes be to the detriment of professional training and processes of care at a clinic. Accordia is proud to be at the forefront of exploring the integration of training and clinical care.”

Ambassador Eric Goosby Joins Accordia Global Health Foundation Board of Directors

WASHINGTON, DC, May 8, 2014 – Ambassador Eric Goosby, former U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and current Professor of clinical medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has been elected to the Accordia Global Health Foundation Board of Directors.

“I am delighted to welcome Ambassador Goosby to our board of directors,” said Hank McKinnell, Chair of the Board of Directors for Accordia Global Health Foundation. “He brings a valuable perspective having spearheaded a global effort to manage the scaling up of sustainable HIV/AIDS treatment capacity which has impacted millions. Our board is looking forward to benefitting from Ambassador Goosby’s vast experience particularly his successful efforts building public private partnership opportunities as we move forward to expand our network of centers of excellence in Africa.”

Ambassador Goosby is currently a Professor in Medicine in the Global Health Sciences program, University of California, San Francisco. Since late 2013, he has been leading the UCSF Global Health Sciences, a new center on implementation sciences that examines the practicalities of running public health programs and applies business-world efficiencies to improve them. Goosby also returned to Ward 86, the AIDS unit at the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center where he worked in the early days of the epidemic.

From 2009 to 2013 Goosby served as the United States Global AIDS Coordinator, leading all U.S. Government international HIV/AIDS efforts. In this role, Goosby oversaw implementation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), as well as U.S. Government engagement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He served on the Operations Committee that leads the U.S. Global Health Initiative, alongside the heads of the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. PEPFAR is the cornerstone of the Global Health Initiative, which takes a comprehensive approach to strengthen health systems and improve health outcomes in the developing world.
