| Ambassador Eric Goosby is Professor of Medicine in the Global Health Sciences program, University of California, San Francisco. In addition to seeing patients and teaching students at the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH), Dr. Goosby is establishing a Center for Implementation Science in global health. In January, 2015 Dr. Goosby was appointed the US SG Special Envoy for Tuberculosis by UN Secretary General (SG), Ban Ki-moon. The posistion has a 3 year term and is designed to strengthen the global response to Tuberculosis, a disease we know how to prevent, diagnose, treat and cure but 1.5 million people die from TB and 9 million are newly infected each year. From 2009 to 2013, Dr. Goosby served as Ambassador at Large and U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, overseeing the implementation of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). In 2012, Ambassador Goosby also led the new Office of Global Health Diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State, advancing the United States' global health mission to improve and save lives and foster sustainability through a shared global responsibility, and implementing the Global Health Initiative's principles and goals. As CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation, 2001-2009, he played a key role in the development and implementation of HIV/AIDS national treatment scale-up plans in South Africa, Rwanda, China and Ukraine, focusing closely on the development of successful HIV/AIDS treatment and treatment-based prevention strategies for high-risk populations. He has over twenty-five years of experience with HIV/AIDS, ranging from early years treating patients at San Francisco General Hospital when AIDS first emerged, to engagement at the highest level of policy leadership, as the Director of the Ryan White Care Act at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and later as Deputy Director of the White House National AIDS Policy Office and Director of the Office of HIV/AIDS Policy of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services during the Clinton Administration. Dr. Goosby has longstanding working relationships with leading multilateral organizations, including UNAIDS, the Global Fund and the World Health Organization. |
