| Executive Vice President, Population Health, Merck & Co., Inc.
Dr. Julie Gerberding is the Executive Vice President for Population Health at Merck & Co., Inc. and leads the company's strategies and partnerships that help to improve population health. She is also responsible for Merck's global public policy, strategic communications, and corporate social responsibility efforts, as well as the Merck for Mothers program and the Merck Foundation. In 2010, Dr. Gerberding joined the company as president of Merck Vaccines, where she globalized the business and championed access to vaccines on behalf of people who need them most around the world. Dr. Gerberding served as Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2002 to 2009. She led the agency through more than 40 emergency responses to public health crises, including anthrax bioterrorism, SARS, avian influenza, and multiple natural disasters. She also advised governments on urgent issues such as pandemic preparedness, AIDS, antimicrobial resistance, obesity, tobacco, and cancer prevention. Dr. Gerberding has received numerous awards and accolades, including the United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Distinguished Service Award for her leadership of the anthrax attacks in 2002. Dr. Gerberding received undergraduate and M.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology and Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she is currently an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in Infectious Diseases. Dr. Gerberding received a Masters of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Public Administrators, and a Fellow in the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American College of Internal Medicine. |
