Professor Souleymane Mboup, PharmD, PhD
Professor of Microbiology and Chief Bacteriology-Virology Laboratory, Université Cheikh Anta Diop - Senegal

Prof Souleymane Mboup is the head of the Bacteriology Virology Department at the University Hospital Le Dantec, University of Dakar, Senegal, a position he has held since 1984. Professor Mboup is also a board member of several international scientific associations working in the field of HIV/AIDS and has developed collaborations and partnerships with well-known research institutions and organizations like Harvard University, l'INSERM in France, Tours and Limoges University, and the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. He is a member of the Partnership Board on the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP), and is now increasingly involved in studies on malaria and tuberculosis.

Professor Souleymane Mboup is an internationally renowned scientist. He has conducted extensive AIDS research with Senegalese Commercial Sex Workers since the 1980s. Since 1985, he has made enormous contributions to the analysis and control of HIV and AIDS in West Africa. He is credited as one of the discoverers of the HIV-2 virus, and has done extensive work in developing epidemiological studies of AIDS. He was instrumental in the initial identification of HIV-2 and to the finding that this HIV-2 virus is less virulent and transmissible than HIV-1. He maintains active research collaboration with several academicians in France, the US, and the UK. He has recently undertaken molecular studies of genetics and transcriptomic of the malaria parasite that contribute to the choice of drugs for control of malaria. Professor Mboup works with state of the art immuno-monitoring of the prevalence and incidence of tuberculosis infection and disease in Dakar using improved ELISPOT-based assays for the diagnosis of tuberculosis infection and also provides baseline data for the assessment of new TB vaccines.

Professor Souleymane Mboup received a Pharm D degree at the University of Dakar in Senegal in 1976, an Immunology MS degree at Pasteur Institute in France in 1981 and a PHD in Bacteriology Virology in 1983 in TOURS (France). Professor MBOUP has authored or co-authored 250 publications and 20 books among which is "AIDS in Africa"
