Professor Idris Mohammed, OON, NNOM, MB, MD, FRCP, DTM&H;, FMCP, FWACP
Professor of Medicine and Clinical Immunology, University of Maiduguri - Nigeria. Hon. Chief Consultant Physician, Federal Medical Centre, Gombe - Nigeria

Idris Mohammed is professor of medicine and clinical immunology at the University of Maiduguri, and chief consultant physician at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. He is also currently Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Gombe State University, and Chairman of the Implementation Committee of the proposed College of Medical Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Nigeria.

Professor Mohammed was the chief medical officer and permanent secretary Ministry of Health, Bauchi, before transferring his services to the Ahmadu Bello University where he became a full professor of Medicine in 1983. Professor Mohammed again transferred to the University of Maiduguri as professor of medicine and clinical immunology in 1984. While at Maiduguri, he served as the foundation chief medical director of the university teaching hospital for nine years and as provost of the College of Medical Sciences for four years.

His research activities center on epidemic meningococcal disease, HIV/AIDS, malaria, typhoid fever, immune response mechanisms in health and disease, as well as non-communicable disease such as rheumatological disorders. His research has generated over 100 peer reviewed scientific publications in highly reputable publications such as The Lancet, The Journal of Infection, Clinical and Experimental Immunology, The Scandinavian Journal of Immunology, Journal of Clinical Pathology, the West African Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and more.

Professor Mohammed has served as Chairman of the National Programme on Immunization and Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. He also served on the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, as well as the Board of the Nigerian Institute for Medical research.

Professor Mohammed attended Barewa College Zaria and the University of Ibadan, graduating with an MB BS in 1969. After obtaining the MBBS from the University of Ibadan, he proceeded to the United Kingdom where he underwent further training that earned him the MRCS, LRCP, DTM&H, MRCP, and MD in Immunology.
