Institute for Child Wellness in Africa

The Institute for Child Wellness in Africa (ICWA) at the University of Malawi will take an unprecedented preventive and interdisciplinary approach to improving child wellness, while bringing new scientific discipline to the exploration of potential synergies and cost efficiencies between various sectors of international development. The center will take a sector-wide approach to the needs of Africa’s children, uniting global leaders in the health, education, agriculture, and business sectors under a single vision and enterprise.

The ICWA will be an independent entity, wholly owned by the University of Malawi, to ensure academic integrity, local ownership, and legitimate sustainability. It will build on existing resources in Malawi and the region, and will bring extensive new international collaboration with individuals and institutions from around the world in the form of expanded financial resources, international expertise, and strong global advocacy. The ICWA will build an unparalleled capacity for innovation around child wellness, inviting researchers to explore promising ways to improve the health and wellness of Malawi’s children. It will provide a learning environment that will develop and retain local professionals, creating new expertise in the region and a critical mass of African leadership to become the world’s authority on child wellness in resource-poor settings.

Through academic collaboration and research, the ICWA will explore and evaluate interdisciplinary approaches to preserving the health of Africa’s children, combining proven strategies with novel ideas for transformative impact and essential cost efficiencies. It will show the world what is possible when organizational barriers are lifted, and it will drastically change the development landscape in Africa and elsewhere in the developing world.
