Accordia Meets with Key Malawi Leaders

March 4, 2013, Washington D.C. - Malawi's President Joyce Banda Embraces Accordia's Vision for an International Center for Child Wellness

Representatives from Accordia Global Health Foundation were in Malawi last week, meeting with key officials to discuss the potential for a new center of excellence focused on child wellness.

“Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa… and at the same time, the country is committed to developing its capacity to care for its children,” said Accordia President Dr. Warner Greene. The proposed Center for Child Wellness would build on that commitment, and engage experts around the world to discover and demonstrate new ways to ensure better lives for children born in sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Greene, along with interim executive director Kelly Willis and senior program manager Victoria Hammond, met with Her Excellency Joyce Banda on Monday. They were accompanied to that meeting by the top leadership of Malawi’s Ministry of Health and the University of Malawi – two essential and committed partners in this new initiative.

Her Excellency President Joyce Banda noted that the institute comes at the right time for Malawi stating, “You have a partner in this administration. I will stand with you. I will support you."

In an interview following the meeting, Vice Chancellor Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano said that since child wellness encompasses more than just health, the operations of the proposed ICCW will also engage experts in education, agriculture, and other critical disciplines. “Creating global expertise in the science of ‘wellness’ will involve much training of expert personnel, researchers, and academia, among others,”Dr. Fabiano said.
