2012 Centers of Excellence Summit
Sustaining Africa’s Centers of Excellence in Health by Building Clinical Trials and Research Capacity
2012 Center of Excellence Summit
October 2012
Addis Ababa, Ehiopia
The three-day meeting will bring together representatives from African Centers of Excellence in Health and will enable continued dialog on issues of sustainability, taking a closer look at one major opportunity for growth and advancement: the development of high-quality clinical trials and research capacity in sub-Saharan Africa.
Several specific issues emerging from Accordia’s 2011 Summit fell within the broader topic of building high-quality research programs in the sub-Saharan Africa context. Those issues ranged from the challenge of inadequate overhead provisions from international research funders, to the opportunity to create new capacity for basic research on the continent.
One particular issue within this topic was seen as an opportunity to create new sources of funded programming that could simultaneously sustain Centers of Excellence, and make a direct contribution to the advancement of health in Africa. Leaders of research institutions asked themselves how they could be better prepared to conduct major clinical research, conforming to the strict requirements of privately sponsored trials. This sub-topic will be a particular focus of Accordia’s 2012 Summit.
