Vice President of Development

Accordia is currently seeking an entrepreneurial and mission-driven development professional to drive resource mobilization/ development efforts for the organization. The VP, Development will be responsible for the overall planning, execution, management and measurement of all fundraising for Accordia. Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience with internationally-oriented NGOs and resource development practices and will enjoy the challenge of creating and building a solid and comprehensive multi-million dollar fundraising program.   In addition they will have a successful track record working with a big concept, growth oriented CEO and Board who are committed to expanding and maximizing the impact of the organization.  Vital to this position will be a demonstrated ability to be an effective leader and manager within the context of a fast-paced setting with rapidly changing priorities.

This position is responsible for developing and implementing a resource mobilization strategy across a variety of donor targets (including bilateral, multilateral, foundation, corporate and individual donors). In addition, s/he will serve as the principal proposal coordinator/writer/editor for Accordia.  S/he also oversees the donor grants reporting function. 

The VP, Development reports directly to the CEO and is a part the Senior Management Team, and as such, is charged with playing a role in the overall management of the organization.

Position Responsibilities

Resource Generation and Strategy

  • Working with the CEO, develop and execute a comprehensive strategy and plan (short, medium and long term, with priorities) for all resource generation efforts, including the exploration of new strategies, approaches, processes and donor targets;
  • Collaborate with the CEO and the Senior Management Team to execute plan by identifying and pursuing new prospective funding from individual donors, foundations, corporations, USG and other bilateral and multilateral funding sources and deepening relationships with existing donors across all sectors;
  • Develop and manage the full range of fundraising lifecycle including (intelligence gathering/research/landscape analysis/ gap and competitive analysis, mapping, relationship building, teaming agreements, proposal writing and donor reporting);
  • With the CEO and Senior Management Team, set realistic revenue goals and establish appropriate metrics to track success.
  • Management and Leadership
  • Oversee the Director of Individual Giving and Accordia’s individual giving program, including the successful execution  of an annual fundraising event with robust corporate sponsorship;
  • Manage effectively and provide leadership to development staff;
  • Provide leadership to the organization in selecting and implementing appropriate technological software (i.e. database systems) to support fundraising operations, donor relations, and analytical report functions;
  • Develop productive working relationships with colleagues, leadership bodies, donors, and partner organizational administration;

Proposal Writing and Donor Relations

  • Serve as principal proposal coordinator, writer and editor for all proposals submitted by Accordia;
  • Write effective and compelling letters, proposals, and correspondence to support cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts for potential and existing donors;
  • Oversee and actively participate in the donor grants reporting function;
  • Respond to donor requests and inquires as required.
  • Communications and Outreach
  • Develop presentations for the Accordia Board of Directors and external stakeholders as required;
  • Represent Accordia in appropriate professional and prospective donor networking opportunities;
  • In collaboration with the Communications Director and other staff identify, leverage and plan strategies to engage donors at various touch points  (e.g. conferences, panel discussions and cultivation events); 
  • In collaboration with the Communications Director, develop briefing materials, talking points, and presentations as required in support of resource generation efforts;
  • Build effective and sustainable public-private partnerships to advance organizational development goals;
  • Partner with program staff to identify projects appropriate for development of programmatic funding, and work to coordinate in-country fundraising efforts for Accordia’s centers of excellence in the early stages of development;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Background

Experience

  • An accomplished Resource Generation professional, with a minimum of 10 years of compelling and measurable record of outstanding accomplishment and professional growth in key development positions, preferably in internationally-focused and/or global health environments.
  • Proven success in securing high-level gifts from individual, corporate and/or institutional major donors at the $100,000 level and above.
  • Experienced and proven track record of working across most or all of the following categories: multilateral and bilateral including non US based aid agencies, foundations, corporations and individual donors. 
  • Experience with strategic planning, programming, and implementation for global resource generation programs and initiatives; ability to bring programs from conceptualization to implementation and evaluation; the ability to think creatively and with long-term objectives.
  • Proven success in developing relationships of mutual trust and partnership with internal and external partners and stakeholders; experience in building coalitions.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • A seasoned proposal writer who has led all aspects of proposal development and submissions. 
  • An ability to understand and communicate (especially in the proposal writing context) scientific information to a range of audiences.
  • Someone versed in international health and development issues, particularly infectious diseases, and with experience in writing proposals with an academic focus.
  • An attitude and experience aligning fundraising efforts with programmatic objectives and outcomes.
  • Knowledge of public/ donor assistance and grant making procedures (tracking, partnering, reporting to competitive solicitations, writing, reporting, contractual).
  • Knowledge of/experience with policy/advocacy and communications, and how to successfully incorporate them into resource generation efforts.

Other Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or business is required, with an advanced degree in business, communications or an academic field, and/or professional certification a plus, but not a prerequisite.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills are required, including an ability to prepare and make effective one-on-one, group presentations and members of the Accordia Board.
  • Proficiency with widely used business management software programs (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as fundraising software systems (e.g. Millennium, Raiser’s Edge, Telosa) is advantageous.
  • Experience living and/or working in a developing country is a strong advantage.
  • Must be willing to travel both domestically and internationally.

Director of Communications

Accordia is currently seeking a Director of Communications to oversee all communications strategy and implementation for the organization.  The Director of Communications will be responsible for developing a proactive and responsive communications strategy that positions Accordia to achieve our long term goals of broadening the base of financial support for our mission and increasing our leadership position in the global health community as a niche player creating and supporting health centers of excellence in developing countries.  This communications strategy must be effective for and targeted to multiple audiences including the private and public sector, philanthropic and private donors, policy makers, global health advocates, academic experts, and prospective employees.  Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience with internationally-oriented organizations and will have experience applying private-sector oriented marketing approaches to communications strategies.  S/he will enjoy the challenge of creating and building a solid messaging platform that will support Accordia’s efforts to expand our impact in Africa. 

This position is responsible for developing and implementing all aspects of communications for Accordia including media and public relations, publication development and dissemination, web-based communications, social media, vendor relations, and communications-related administrative matters.  In addition, the Director will develop strategic partnerships, platforms, and events to increase Accordia’s visibility.

The Director of Communications reports directly to the CEO and is part of the Senior Management Team, and, as such, is charged with playing a role in the overall management of the organization.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, design, develop, implement, and measure a comprehensive strategy and plan for all communication efforts.
  • Develop comprehensive global media relations strategies for reputation building, support of major announcements, and advancement of our leadership position; maintain relationships with key reporters.
  • Develop and supervise Accordia’s public relations strategy by determining target audiences, identifying channels, developing messages, and assessing all communication tactics.
  • Lead the development of Accordia promotional and educational materials to support organizational objectives including annual reports, web-site, brochures, newsletters, and video materials.  Work closely with other departments to facilitate the achievement of specific goals in stakeholder engagement, resource mobilization, advocacy and policy development, and reputation building.
  • Lead the publication, conference, and messaging/media strategies for academic publications; work with Accordia’s scientific thought leaders to bring publications to fruition.
  • Develop and execute a strategy for attending/sponsoring key conferences, panels, exhibition booths, and supporting associations to increase the visibility of Accordia to donors and other stakeholders.
  • Work closely with senior management to ensure executive communications needs are anticipated and met including organizational positioning, and systematic communications to the Board of Directors, International Council, Academic Alliance and other key audiences.
  • In collaboration with the VP Development, develop briefing materials, talking points, correspondence, invitations and presentations as required in support of resource generation efforts.
  • Contribute to the writing/ editing and formatting of concept papers, proposals, and other documents as required.
  • Select and manage relationships with outside partners including graphic and digital design firms, printers, etc.
  • Coordinate with the Program staff to ensure they are properly supported from a communications perspective.
  • Implement key performance metrics for communications, and have accountability for results.
  • Develop and effectively administer a budget and direct both internal and outside communication resources to satisfy annual plans for communications programs.
  • Maintain Accordia external events calendar.
  • Represent Accordia in appropriate professional and industry events.

Director of Individual Giving

Accordia is currently seeking an entrepreneurial and mission-driven development professional to oversee all individual giving fundraising efforts for the organization. The Director, Individual Giving, will be responsible for the overall planning, execution, and management, and measurement of all philanthropic fundraising for Accordia. Successful candidates will have demonstrated experience identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospects and donors at the $50,000+ level, ideally within an internationally-oriented health organization.  In addition they will have a successful track record building and executing an annual fundraising program. 

This position is responsible for leading all individual giving efforts at Accordia, with a particular emphasis on implementing a major gifts plan that retains and renews current donors while identifying and acquiring prospective donors.  Through well-articulated identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship strategies, s/he will engage the foundation’s largest individual donors ($5,000+) in the work and impact of Accordia while expanding the major donor file to include new supporters. S/he works closely with the Vice President, Development to develop a strategy towards achievement of Accordia’s annual fundraising goals as well as for increasing support for specific programs from individuals and family foundations.

The Director, Individual Giving, is also responsible for managing all fundraising events at Accordia, including Accordia’s annual signature event: the Celebration of Partnership. 

Position Responsibilities

  • Working with the VP, Development, develop a comprehensive strategy and plan for individual giving, including the exploration of new strategies and approaches;
  • With the VP, Development, set realistic revenue goals and establish appropriate metrics to track success;
  • Execute individual giving plan, generating approximately $1M per year in sustainable annual revenue, with appropriate increases in each subsequent year.  Develop and execute strategies to cultivate and solicit annual gifts from Accordia’s existing donors and new prospects, with an emphasis on gifts of $1000+;
  • Serve as a primary relationship manager and make direct solicitations.  Take the lead on specific philanthropic donor targets (individuals, family foundations) that are identified (this includes intelligence gathering/research/mapping, relationship building, proposal writing, and donor reporting);
  • Develop productive working relationships with Accordia’s Board of Directors, International Council and engage and support Accordia leadership and senior staff in the cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects;
  • Oversee the planning and executing of events and meetings to cultivate, solicit, and steward potential and existing donors;
  • In collaboration with the Communications Director, develop briefing materials, talking points, and presentations as required in support of individual giving efforts;

  • Proven track record of soliciting and securing five- and six-figure gifts from individual donors;
  • Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising and the ability to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle including: initiating contacts with prospects and donors; developing creative and effective solicitation strategies; moving prospects and donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation; effective solicitation and gift closure; stewardship;
  • Demonstrated experience preparing major gift proposals.
  • Ability to work individually and across the organization; excellent teamwork skills.

Program Director, Nigeria

The Program Director, Nigeria will lead new program development in Nigeria in close consultation with Accordia’s senior management.  This position offers the rare opportunity for a creative and motivated professional to be part of a start-up team leading the establishment and growth of the West African Infectious Diseases Institute (WAIDI).  WAIDI will be modeled on the highly successful Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda and will conduct essential research and systems strengthening activities, with the goal of strengthening local governments’ ability to set effective health policy, improve practice in the public and private sectors, and ensure better health outcomes for their populations. The successful candidate will be charged with building relationships with the Nigerian government, academic institutions, the Nigerian and West African diaspora, other governments and the private sector; representing Accordia and WAIDI to U.S. Government agencies and other potential donors; and supporting Accordia corporate leadership in planning and implementation of activities in Nigeria. 

Accordia recently established WAIDI as a multi-institutional Center of Excellence for research and training in Nigeria.  WAIDI is based in Abuja but relies on the strong engagement of various universities throughout the region; integrating their faculty and resources, and augmenting their capacity through international linkages and specialized infrastructure.  The Institute will be locally owned and autonomous, strategically linking and supporting the region’s universities and other key health sector stakeholders, with the goal of strengthening local governments’ ability to set effective health policy, improve practice in the public and private sectors, and ensure better health outcomes for their populations.

Position Location: Washington, DC / Abuja, Nigeria

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • With senior management team, contributes to strategic and long-range planning for WAIDI and its programs in Nigeria and western Africa. 
  • With guidance from legal counsel, develops a specific plan for gradual WAIDI board expansion over the next several years.
  • Continues to expand and manage the West African Academic Alliance, and coordinates the role of the WAIDI Steering Committee in finalizing the strategic plan for WAIDI. 
  • Serves as Accordia’s Country Lead for Nigeria and manages the internal cross-functional team to set priorities, develop workplans, and assign roles and responsibilities to achieve agreed upon annual goals for WAIDI. 
  • With support from Accordia’s Director of Program Development, identifies and pursues incremental funding opportunities for WAIDI programming, and pursues major resources for WAIDI infrastructure and multi-year strategic plan. 
  • Keeps Accordia staff well informed of the funding landscape in Nigeria, including available opportunities, pending proposals, and major awards to other organizations.
  • Manages the planning and implementation of grant funded activities and identifies potential partners for joint-programming opportunities.  Assists the Grants Management team to ensure effective grant monitoring and reporting to funding partners as needed.
  • Oversees the establishment of administrative infrastructure and systems, including development of institutional policies, recruitment and managing of Abuja-based staff, negotiation of various forms of WAIDI membership, and management of contracts with local vendors.
  • Builds relationships with relevant Nigerian government agencies, major corporations, foundations and other potential partners.
  • Represents Accordia to U.S. Government, e.g. USAID, CDC, Department of Defense and other relevant stakeholders, and attends local meetings as appropriate.
  • Represents Accordia to local media as requested by Senior Management.

Qualifications:

Education:  Advanced degree(s) in public or international health.  Candidates with a medical degree will be given preferential considerations.   

Experience: 

  • Minimum of ten years professional experience in global health or international development, involving program development, strategic planning, and/or business planning and budgeting.
  • Prior work experience in Nigeria essential.
  • Prior work experience in an academic and/or research setting preferred.

Essential Requirements:

  • Skilled at thinking strategically in a global health and infectious disease context, particularly as relates to health systems strengthening and infectious disease strategy and intervention.
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively on complex global health issues, in writing and through public speaking.
  • Superior organizational skills, project management skills, and previous managerial experience, including set-up of organizational infrastructure and procedures helpful. 
  • Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining a long-term vision with a unique attention to detail in a fast paced environment. 
  • Proven success in building, maintaining, and managing long-term relationships with colleagues, consultants, partners and funders.
  • Position may be based in Washington, DC or Abuja, Nigeria and could require 30% travel.

Communications and Development Intern

Accordia Global Health Foundation is seeking one creative and skilled communicator to assist with a variety of projects including (but not limited to) graphic design, social media, event planning and execution, and fundraising and development.

Specific duties might include:

  • Maintaining Accordia’s social media accounts
  • Creating and assembling communications materials, including brochures, newsletters, and e-mail blasts
  • Identifying potential projects, partners, or funders
  • Helping plan and execute events
  • Maintaining Accordia’s contact and donor databases
  • Providing administrative support
  • Other duties as assigned

Projects will be distributed based on the intern’s individual interests and skills. Internship can count for class credit and will last a minimum of one semester. Ideal position for students or recent graduates. Extensive coursework in communications, public/media relations, international relations, public health, or related fields preferred.
