2011 Center of Excellence Summit

Accordia Global Health Foundation, in partnership with the Wellcome Trust, will be hosting the Center of Excellence Summit in Kampala, Uganda on September 12-13, 2011. The Summit will convene leaders from many of the most successful, lasting and innovative health-focused Centers from across Africa, and invite a closer look at elements of their individual governance and operating models that have contributed to their success. The closed meeting will offer a rare forum in which leaders of Africa’s Centers of Excellence can candidly exchange insights, share lessons learned, and discuss future challenges to the continued success and growth of their Centers.

Centers of Excellence have been developed in Africa to address some of the most critical health problems, specifically HIV/AIDS, malaria, and TB, and more recently cardiovascular disease. Many of these centers are young and still in the growth phase which creates an opportune time to bring them together to share best practices. The 2011 Centers of Excellence Summit will focus on the leadership challenges of sustaining Centers of Excellence in a rapidly evolving global health and funding landscape. It will also provide an opportunity for these institutions to network with each other to allow for continuous information sharing beyond an initial meeting and to give these institutions resources to call upon as they grow and sustain their activities.

The Summit program will include presentations from selected Sustainable Centers of Excellence and will highlight unique factors that have contributed to their success or raised significant challenges of relevance to other Centers. Discussion groups will be formed around the sustainability of the business models with emphasis on specific themes (i.e. governance and leadership, strategic partnerships, management, policy advocacy, diversification, networks).

The findings of the meeting will help define a set of business and operating recommendations to support the long term development of Sustainable Centers of Excellence and networks in Africa.

Results from the Summit will be shared at Accordia’s Celebration of Partnership  October 11, 2011 in Washington DC.
