Accordia Fellow Helps Advance Institute for Child Wellness in Africa

Towela Maleta was selected to be the first Shelia Johnson Fellow in March 2013, serving as a technical assistant with Accordia and the MAC-Communicable Disease Action Center at the University of Malawi.  A graduate of that university’s Kamuzu College of Nursing and a recipient of the College of Medicine’s HIV Leadership and Management fellowship, she focuses on health system capacity building and resource mobilization. Maleta, a nurse with government and NGO experience, has been using her public health knowledge and strong communications, management, and training skills to help advance the establishment of the Institute for Child Wellness in Africa.

Maleta coordinates training activities and plans stakeholder meetings among a diverse set of allies including Accordia, MAC, several government ministries and university colleges, and other Accordia implementing partners. She is also involved in strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers to improve case management of malaria and other communicable diseases.

“I am working to promote the health and wellness of children through action-oriented collaboration among all stakeholders to enhance collective outcomes such as growth, health, development, and productivity of children and young people,” said Maleta.
