Ebola Outbreak in Uganda
August 1, 2012, Washington D.C. - Over the weekend, an Ebola outbreak was confirmed in the Kibaale district of Uganda, where our flagship center, the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), has been providing training to health workers and support to local clinics, labs, and district health teams for almost four years. Ebola is a highly contagious virus that causes severe fever, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding. There is no treatment and no vaccine.
Due to its long-standing work in the district, IDI has been involved with first response efforts to contain the disease, educate local populations and health officials in prevention measures, protect frontline health workers through the provision of protective clothing and other emergency supplies, and provide assistance in setting up isolation facilities.
“As a local Center of Excellence, IDI combines expertise in training, clinical care, prevention services, and research, allowing for a fast, effective, and comprehensive response to health emergencies like this,” said Accordia Global Health Foundation’s President Dr. Warner C. Greene.
Accordia is working with our partners to secure the necessary provisions and supplies to isolate those infected, protect frontline workers, and support IDI.
