New Report Addresses Challenges to the Sustainability of Africa's Centers of Excellence in Health

Summit Participants A new report by Accordia Global Health Foundation, African Centers of Excellence in Health , highlights the critical role Centers of Excellence play in building sustainable health capacity by enhancing medical education, conducting high-quality research, and influencing national and regional health policy. The report marks an important step forward for Accordia and its partners’ efforts to support the ongoing viability and impact of these transformative African institutions.

The report follows a 2011 Summit of 18 Centers of Excellence from 12 African countries convened by Accordia and the Wellcome Trust. The two-day Summit held in Kampala, Uganda, was intended as an opportunity to assemble more information about the most effective ways to support and sustain African Centers of Excellence in Health, and for these Centers to candidly exchange insights and shared experiences.

“These centers are transforming national healthcare systems from within. These institutions are beacons of high-quality healthcare, world-class research, and effective medical education and training – in support of effective leadership, a strong workforce, and a healthy and vibrant Africa. Their survival and prosperity is of paramount importance to our increasingly intertwined futures,” said Accordia president, Dr. Warner C. Greene.
