2011 Awardee: Dr. Christian Happi

Dr. Christian Happi Named Winner of Second Annual Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award

Dr. Christian Happi, a molecular biologist from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, was awarded the 2011 Merle A. Sande Leadership Award by Accordia Global Health Foundation. Honored for his work on the molecular basis for malarial resistance to counteractive drugs, Dr. Happi gave a speech at the Sub-Saharan Africa CFAR conference in May, during which he talked of his research on the development of new antimalarials, in addition to his use of advanced technology to deepen the understanding of drug-resistant malarial parasites.

After graduating with a B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Yaounde, Cameroon, Dr. Happi continued his education at the University of Ibadan, obtaining both an M.Sc and a Ph.D. Other awards and fellowships include; Boroughs Wellcome and Bill & Melinda Gates Awards at the 2010 Genome Epidemiology Meeting, European Union-Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Senior Research Fellowship Award 2009, Scientific Advisory Committee Chair at the 2008 Africa Health Research Organization (AHRO), TurnerBiosciences Research Award 2007, and a Member of the International Scientific Committee of the 4th MIM Pan African Conference on Malaria (2003-2005).

Dr. Happi currently divides his time between Ibadan, where he is the Principal Investigator of the Malaria Research Laboratories within the university, and the Harvard School of Public Health, where he serves as a Visiting Investigator in the Department of Immunology and Infectious Diseases.
