PROFILE: Allen Mukhwana, IDI Senior Research Administrator

Allen Mukhwana is the senior research administrator at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.  She started her IDI career as a research and communications assistant for the AIDS Treatment Information Centre, then joined IDI’s Central Research Office in 2010.

In 2012, Mukhwana worked with Pfizer Global Health Fellow Janet White, who went to IDI for three months to provide support to the Research Office to develop its strategic plan and strengthen its clinical trial management. Mukhwana requested that White be her mentor, and she credits White’s guidance in clarifying her plans and “firming up” the department’s functions.

“I believe that Pfizer’s Global Health Fellows program is an opportunity for IDI staff to get exposed to different and efficient work ethics,” said Mukhwana.  “The Fellows are resources not many institutions can boast about. IDI is very fortunate to get such high caliber people coming to work with and mentor staff.” She asserts that IDI has greatly benefited from the skills shared by Pfizer colleagues through the fellowship program and points to several major accomplishments including the creation of a Health Economics and Outcomes Unit in the Research Office, the appointment of a quality manager, and the development of several working documents.  “The Fellows bring their own experiences, which they share with staff,” she explained. “Individuals who work closely with them gain from this and build relationships that last beyond the fellowship.”
