Infectious Diseases Summit 2010

Return on Investment: Building Healthcare Capacity in Africa

Accordia Global Health Foundation, in partnership with the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) of Makerere University and the Fogarty International Center at the US National Institutes of Health, will host Accordia’s Third Annual Infectious Diseases Summit on April 15-16 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Infectious Diseases Summit series is an invitation-only event designed to bring together key leaders and experts from the private sector, government, NGOs, foundations, and academia in a two-day, high-level strategic meeting to address issues related to long-term healthcare capacity building in Africa.

The theme of the 2010 Summit is Return on Investment: Building Healthcare Capacity in Africa. The theme builds upon the broad call for greater accountability as the global health community shifts from an emergency response to the infectious disease crisis in Africa toward an emphasis on enabling permanent health systems. The meeting is designed to generate new ways to frame how we define impact and translate the global call to action as it relates to long-term capacity building programs by sharing best practices and providing a dynamic forum for innovative thinking.

The meeting will facilitate a collective review of innovative approaches to measuring and communicating the long-term impact of healthcare capacity-building initiatives and will challenge participants to answer critical questions, such as:

  • How can we best design healthcare capacity programs to enable evaluations that capture multiple levels of impact?
  • What can we measure, beyond the conventional, to better demonstrate total value?
  • What can we learn from other sectors that have done this successfully?
  • How can we resolve the inherent challenges in balancing core funding needs with rigorous evaluation, short term reporting cycles with long-term impact measures, and  basic accountability with scientific rigor?
  • What innovative methods and metrics are being developed? Is there an opportunity to approach this in a new way with the growth of and advances in technology?
  • How can we better translate and communicate impact to ensure sustained global investment?

The 2010 meeting also builds upon a call to action from the 2009 Infectious Diseases Summit, the theme of which was Building Healthcare Leadership in Africa. Please click here for more information on the 2009 Summit and the resulting publication.
