Accordia Honored Dr. Anthony Fauci at the 2009 A Celebration of Partnership

Accordia’s 2009 A Celebration of Partnership symposium and gala reception was held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. This festive and informative event provided attendees an opportunity to engage with major global healthcare leaders from government, the private sector, and academia, as health experts explore the impact of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDs, malaria, and tuberculosis on Africa and discuss the response to this crisis. At this year’s event, Accordia featured and honored Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, whose vision and leadership has inspired worldwide partnership in the fight against infectious disease. Dr. Fauci oversees an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, influenza, tuberculosis and malaria. He is one of the key advisors to the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services on global AIDS issues, as well as on initiatives to bolster preparedness against emerging infectious disease threats.

The symposium also featured presentations from Staffan Landin from the internationally-acclaimed Gapminder and Dr. Andrew Kambugu, head of Prevention, Care & Treatment at the Infectious Diseases Institute in Kampala, Uganda. Joining the speakers for a discussion following the presentations were former United States global AIDS coordinator Ambassador Mark Dybul, who now co-directs  the Global Health Law Center at Georgetown University Law School’s O’Neill Institute, and Dr. Julie Gerberding, who served from 2002 to 2009 as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
